Oracle of Delphi by swo8 Blues Jazz from the album Efharisto in iTunes

Delphi is located in upper central Greece, on multiple plateaux along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo (the god of light, knowledge and harmony), the site where the ancient Oracle did her business. Tales of the  Delphic Oracle, start as early as 1400 BC.  She shared a glimpse into the future and in uncertain times that was a very valuable and alluring commodity. Apollo spoke through his oracle. She had to be an older woman of blameless character chosen from among the peasants of the area. Alone in an enclosed inner sanctum, she sat on a tripod seat over an opening in the earth (the “chasm”). According to legend, when Apollo slew the Python its body fell into this fissure and fumes arose from its decomposing body. Intoxicated by the vapours, the sibyl (oracle) would fall into a trance, allowing Apollo to possess her spirit. In this state she prophesied. The prophesies were often ambiguous with an element of truth. The photos of Delphi are mine taken a few years ago. It’s quite a site and well worth seeing. 3:32 min.

  1. Tubularsock once upon a time went by bus to Delphi.

Not a bad journey but after Tubularsock poked fun at Apollo at Delphi with a few old Greek jokes that only Tubularsock could tell “the sibyl” got back at Tubularsock and the bus ride home was a bitch of a trip!

“the sibyl” just had no sense of humor …… AT ALL!

  2. I haven’t been anywhere out of the U.S. except for Mexico, Britain and Scotland. I am woefully untraveled. Love the music.
