This post is a request from Gert Loveday, Fun with Books, and dedicated to Michelle Payne, the first woman to win Australia’s most famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup. Michelle’s comment to those who don’t rate women as jockeys (i.e. most of the industry) can “get stuffed”. Way to go Michelle!

Hey thanks Leslie! I’m going to reblog this for one of our posts this Wednesday. Can you explain the expression “posting in the trot?”

I believe it is the British style of riding. The rider lifts up on the down step of the horse. If you Google it they show you what it looks like.

Did you film this yourself?

Yes, it was mostly from North Africa where they probably don’t post. They have a different saddle.

As you may know Leslie, we live in Lexington, Kentucky, the self-proclaimed horse capital of the world. We’ve just finished Keeneland Racetrack’s fall meet and the Breeder’s Cup, so we’ve had a big dose of horse racing. As you say, there aren’t too many female jocks, but whenever we see one riding, we always put down a couple of bucks to win. This year, a female trainer (even more rare than jockies) had a big contender in the Breeder’s Cup. Slowly but surely knocking on the glass ceiling. ~James
