April 20-22, 2001 we drove some 8.5 hours to be present at the “Summit of the Americas” in Quebec City. It was the third summit and the multinational corporations were heavily represented as well as the Heads of State from the governments of the Americas. Security was heavy with a continuous 3 metre high concrete and wire fence. The police force amounted to a small army dressed in the universal black assault uniform. They said there was some 20,000 protesters. The numbers were more like 100,000 people. The protesters were divided into three groups – green for peaceful protest, then there were yellow and red. The yellows and reds breached the fence in no time and the police responded by using tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets on the greens. We were tear gassed.
These Trades Deals tend to be negotiated in private without public input or oversight. To me, one of the most egregious part to these agreements is Chapter 11. Multinational Corportions, under the guise of investor protection, are able to sue governments over environmental and economic regulations. That constitues the ultimate “Sell out” of the people! Please feel free to reblog.
