The Reader by L. Martel

This is a 12″ x 16″ oil on canvas I started last week. I did the preliminary drawing for this many years ago and only now have started the painting. Reading is a enormous way to acquire knowledge. One can live many lives, visit many places and experience many adventures just by opening a page in a book.

The original drawing as follows:

  1. I really like your blog. A pleasure to come stroll on your pages. A great discovery and a very interesting blog. Fascinating and beautiful. I will come back to visit you. Do not hesitate to visit my universe. See you soon 🙂

  2. I came back to this posting, it fits what Alliah is living now. Now 27 months, I bought her 3 hardened picture books with the limit of words or numbers on each page. The numbers 1-10 starts with #1 bright red apple. When she or we open the books sometimes together, she will say apple. The interesting point, Alliah is Filipina. So she will learn Cebuano and English. In the Philippines the government is trying to suppress local languages, making English the official second national language to unify across the many local languages here in the Philippines.

    • It’s a delightful time in childhood and I’m glad she is learning to read. I would strive to keep your local languages. They are part of your tradition and heritage. BTW I used to play the flute in a Filipino choir. They would call me the blonde Filipina.
