In today’s world, the accent is on doing mission-oriented work, which may lead to devices that will make money. Even if scientific work is considered to be “pure”, every paper produced these days by scientific organizations is examined by special teams, both internal and external, to determine if a reported finding has any commercial potential. In some small way this seems to me to amount to subservience to mammon. As a matter of fact, around the year 2000 AECL shed its bevy of “pure” physicists and converted entirely to doing just nuclear engineering.
