Chapter 2 Prestige Physics at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories
In the 1960’s, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) was competing with the U.S. and Britain in the business of building and selling nuclear reactors. In those days most companies like AECL kept a bevy of approximately thirty “pure” physicists who were suppose to be very competent. AECL physicists we’re located in Chalk River. They were suppose to buttress the competence of AECL by publishing new and startling research results that would make the world take note of the company. These physicists were engaged in what is now called “prestige physics”. If by chance they made some discovery that made AECL more competitive, then so much the better.
