On the north shore of the Rio Negro, the thriving city of Manaus is situated. Access to the city is primarily by boat or airplane. The Rio Negro is 18K/11mi. up stream from where it merges with the Rio Solimões, to form the Rio Amazonas. During the wet season, the river floods the country far and wide, sometimes to a width of 30 kilometres (19 mi). During this season, April until October, it is a succession of lagoons, full of long islands and intricate channels with a lot of water wildlife. A lot of the buildings along the shoreline are build on stilts in anticipation of the annual floods. So picture yourself deep in the rain forest floating down this river of mystery and romance. 3:36 min.
