To continue on the subject of dance, this is a 20″ x 24″ oil on canvas called On Point. Ballet is a a tradition in our family. I started ballet when I was four years old as did our two daughters. There is something about the grace of ballet that inspires artists. I have done some other paintings of ballerinas but they are of my daughters and are private. This young girl is a bit older and has begun to do point. The characteristic pink ballet slippers with the insert in the toes of the shoes so she can stand on her toes. It is a tradition. My style is beginning to change in this painting and there is a surrealistic feel to it.
Lovely!

When did you do this one, Leslie? It’s interesting to see the change in style.

I just had another look at it and I neither signed it nor did I date it. I hate it when I do that. It was probably done between 1988-89 when we were living in Paris. The canvas comes from France, so it was painted there.

Have you always painted?

It would seem so. I’ve been doing it for a long time.

It’s a talent I’d love to have.

Work on it. I remember talking with my mother who was also a very good artist – I didn’t know if the talent for it was there. She told me just to keep at it.

I think you’ve either got the eye or you haven’t. Like writing. You can learn technique but you can’t learn that spark, whatever it is.
In any case, there already aren’t enough hours in the day!

I used to think there was nothing as graceful as a ballerina during a performance. That is, until I began seeing them captured on canvas. Beautiful!

A wonderful, graceful dancer. Degas would approve 🙂

Yes Degas liked his ballerinas. I’m honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence. Thank you Marilyn.

Bisous , Bernard
