I wonder if you would still see this in Beijing? Have you t=been there recently, Leslie? I imagine there must be huge differences just in the last 10 years.

Beijing was in a major development mode when we were there. We did stay in an original Hutong when we first arrived to see what it was like. They (Hutong) were rumoured to be endangered in order to modernize the city. So I would expect many changes have transpired since our visit.
