The Despairing Child by L. Martel

The Despairing Child is a 20″ x 24″ oil on canvas painted  sometime in the 1980’s. When I saw the little boy from Aleppo, Oman Daqneesh, sitting in that chair wiping the blood from his face it brought this painting to mind. It is always the children who suffer.

  2. Beautiful and heart-rending painting Leslie. Each time I see a new image of a bloodied and limp child I despair more. Even those adults who don’t have children of their own once were children. It’s our universal experience and I struggle to understand how anyone could detonate a bomb or pull a trigger that could harm the people we all once were.

  3. Reminds us of the things we would rather sweep out of minds when we indulge in our favourite piece of political rhetoric (irrespective of which side of the argument we are on).
    A good and timely reminder.

  4. Do you remember the circumstances when you painted this, Leslie? These tragedies have become commonplace these days, unfortunately, but back in the 80’s it was rare, I think, to see such confronting images in the news.

  5. That picture although painted a long time ago, it does reflect the state of children in our world today. Like you when I saw that image of the five year old from Alepo wiping blood from his head I wondered what was going on in his little mind. I wondered if Asad and Putting would go to bed at peace with themselves knowing that their actions are inflicting such pain of defenceless children. No child should be subjected to that kind of suffering. Thank you for sharing that painting it reminds all of us that we have a responsibility to keep children safe.

  6. We were given a beautiful heart, enough for all, and we cannot but ruin it and kill each other. As Jesus said, “No man is good.” Not that all or even most of us want to kill each other off, but we don’t seem to be changing the minds of those that do.
