Game of Chess by L. Martel

This is a 12″ x 9.5″ pencil sketch on paper from a sketch pad and is called “Game of Chess” done in 1983. The opponent has gone off for a drink and the gentleman, on-face with the glasses, is giving the other player “the look”. Maybe someday I do a rendition in oil.

  1. The depth & detail r astonishing! I took a sketching course once and was lead to believe that sketching is not a gift, but a skill that can be learned, however, I beg to differ… I could never do anything remotely close to THIS.

    • The observer is say you’re going to regret that move. The guy with the hat is humming and hawing and thinking to himself- should I move here or should I move there?

  2. Fascinating how the fellow on the left has his hand and one finger pointing in a direction under the table.
Your are a very talented artist, Leslie.

    • I have The Reception in oil on canvas with two older gentlemen talking and sharing a drink after the wedding. This one was a sketch I had done many years ago. I always liked it and thought I could frame it just as it is. It was either that one or a sketch of my feet.
